Get to know yourself through art

This year is not just about learning new skills, but also about discovering who you are as an artist. You will experiment with materials and ideas, work on your own projects, and discuss your artistic journey with others.

Impressions and expressions

On the art course, we explore how thoughts, feelings, and experiences shape our art. Different ideas require different expressions, and we take a closer look at the relationship between impressions and expressions through various materials and techniques.

Who is this for?

Whether you have prior knowledge or are completely new to art, the teaching is designed to suit you. The most important thing is that you are motivated to work creatively and have a desire to develop.

What can you expect?

The teaching is organized into focus periods, usually lasting 1-3 weeks, where you explore various techniques, themes, and forms of expression. The projects are shaped by your own ideas, and you will receive feedback from both teachers and fellow students. Throughout the year, guest teachers will introduce new methods and perspectives.

Guidance from professionals

In your daily life, you will receive professional input, inspiration, and guidance from teachers who work with art professionally. Throughout the school year, we work on a variety of different projects, both individually and in groups. Some of the projects are shared, and others you define according to your own interests.

Practical info

  • There are no prior knowledge requirements to become a student on the art course, but it is important that you have an interest in art and want to learn more about it. As a student on the course, you are responsible for your own learning.

With us, everyone receives individual guidance at their own level. It can be an advantage if you have some prior knowledge of art, but if you are a complete beginner, you will learn what you need to get started. If you have already been involved in drawing, painting, sculpture, or other things in this area, we have the equipment and expertise to take you a step further.

The year is suitable for you both if you are just curious and love to create, and if you have plans for higher education in the arts. We will help you with school applications. Some of the students from the art department at Fana apply to art schools, such as the Art School in Bergen (KiB), art history at university level, architecture colleges, etc. The teacher in the art department knows a lot about writing applications, which schools you can apply to, and how to go about creating a portfolio of your own work.

  • Bergen is an important art and culture city nationally and internationally and has a lot of exciting art and culture to offer, where you can experience a lot of different things at a number of arenas for exhibitions, concerts, films and performances. There are not many other folk high schools that have such a rich cultural offer so close to the school.

During the school year we visit both permanent art collections, such as Kode's art collections; we visit temporary exhibitions at large galleries such as Bergen Kunsthalle, but also smaller galleries that are more hidden. These trips give us a lot of inspiration for our own art, and an opportunity to discuss many different topics. We visit both exhibitions with older artworks, and brand new artworks from near and far.

  • You get your own dedicated workspace and plenty of time to work on your own outside of school hours. Whether you are a night owl or like to work on weekends, all our facilities are available when inspiration strikes. It takes time to make art, and you should have plenty of time to work on your own.

In addition to the art classroom, students have the opportunity to use other facilities at the school - such as a darkroom and equipment for analog photography, musical instruments and equipment for sound and music recording, various rooms with projectors - where you can, for example, watch films.
