Daily life at Fana folkehøgskule

During a typical school week, you'll have plenty to keep you busy.

The days are filled with lessons and practical tasks like kitchen duty and housekeeping.

In the afternoons and evenings, there are no mandatory activities, but there's always something interesting happening – it's up to you how you want to spend your time.

Here's what a typical week might look like

Monday: We start the week with a school-wide meeting where students and staff gather to get the latest news about the week ahead. After that, students attend their line classes (major classes). After lunch, it's time for elective courses.

Tuesday : We start the day with morning assembly. The morning assembly starts with a story. Then a student gives a short presentation on a topic of their choice, before we wrap up with information about the day. The rest of the day the students are on their own. Many classes use this day for various excursions in Bergen , such as visiting exhibitions or collaborating with external organizations.

Wednesday: The day starts with a morning gathering, followed by line time (major time). After lunch, it's time to tidy up rooms and common areas. The school day ends with the subject of life skills.

Thursday: We start the day with house meetings in the dormitories, before starting with line teaching (major teaching). After lunch, it's time for the elective courses that run throughout the semester.

Friday: After the morning gathering, it's time for electives. After lunch, all the students gather for a sing-along, followed by an update on the news in the subject of Utsyn (Outlook).

Saturday: On most Saturdays, we have seminars where both staff and inspiring guests give lectures and workshops.

Sunday : This is your day off, so you can spend it with friends at the folk high school or go on a trip to Bergen .

  • You'll only really discover what daily life is like as the school year progresses – and everyone's experience is different.

    Daytime instruction

The weekdays start with breakfast, which is served from eight to half past eight. At half past eight, we gather for a morning assembly.

Depending on what day it is, you then meet for online classes, collective subjects or elective subjects.

We have a good lunch break in the middle of the day.

From Monday to Friday, classes run until around 3 PM, followed by dinner at 3:30 PM.

Activities and free time in the afternoon

After dinner, there are many different activities at the school. We use the afternoons and evenings for various elective courses, exercise options, social activities, movie nights, and project work.

In addition, many students use the afternoons to relax with friends. Activities after dinner are always optional, so you can choose whether or not to participate.

    Life at the dormitory

In the dormitory, you'll get to know your corridor neighbors and, of course, your roommate. Most students at Fana live in double rooms, but we also have some single rooms. In an otherwise social environment, it can sometimes be nice to retreat to your room, perhaps with a good book.

Activities at and outside the school

There are plenty of opportunities to do things together with other students, such as ball games in the gym, film making, or board games in the lounge. There are many possibilities here.

  • Saturday seminars

On Saturdays, there are usually seminars during the day. Every Saturday, you'll be offered a new seminar with a new topic and new perspectives.

Some seminars are mandatory, while others are optional. You are welcome to participate in all of them if you wish.

    Student social nights

The student social nights are something you won't want to miss. Each course gets one Saturday evening to present themselves and create a program for the other students. The students know best what their fellow students like to do, so these evenings are guaranteed to be a success.

    Food and accommodation during weekends

Food is of course also served on weekends, but at slightly different times than during the rest of the week.

Rooms and equipment are also available to students on Saturdays and Sundays, so there are plenty of opportunities to stay active.

Students who do not travel away during the weekends can stay at the school even if they have a free weekend. You can only not live in the dormitory during the holidays.
