The ferry people - storm and calm, party and birth, love and queue
The ferry people - storm and calm, party and birth, love and queue
Halvard Folgerø has a story based on his latest book Ferry People - storm and calm, party and birth, love and queue .
Ferries are a permanent and necessary part of the life of the westerner. Journalist Halvor Folgerø takes us on ferry trips and tells stories from the Smøla route in the north to the Kvitsøy ferry in the south. Join us on fjords and stretches of sea, meet happy ticket sellers, proud captains, hear stories about everyday life and comedy, drama and accidents.
The very first car ferry in this country was called "Salhusfærgen". From 1919, the ferry transported both people and cars across Karmsundet in Rogaland. Today, the ferries are being replaced in many places with bridges and tunnels. In the last 50 years, 111 ferry connections have been closed or moved in this country, almost half of them in Western Norway. Nostalgic people are filled with joy, while others rejoice when they see a closed ferry pier.
The ferries evoke strong emotions. And they are here to stay, at least for a while longer. The story of the ferries forms an important part of the history of Norway, and not least of the Norwegian outskirts.
