The musical "Lazarus" is described as David Bowie's final gift to his fans. Featuring 18 of his most iconic songs and inspired by the sci-fi film "The Man Who Fell to Earth."
About the performance
Thomas Newton comes from another planet, but is condemned to eternal life on Earth. As he longs to leave, he tries to drown ghosts from the past in gin, and wavers between reality and dream. For both otherworldly and human characters knock on the door in this musical tale of love and loss, loneliness and exclusion.
The musical is a continuation of the story of Thomas Newton as told in the novel The Man Who Fell to Earth by Walter Tevis. David Bowie played Newton in the 1976 film adaptation of the novel. In our version, Bjørn Willberg Andersen will play the role of Newton.
40 years on earth without getting older
In short, the film The Man Who Fell to Earth is about an alien (Newton) who comes to Earth in search of water for his own planet, but events that occur make it impossible for him to return to where he came from.
In "Lazarus," 40 years have passed, and Thomas Newton is still on this alien planet. He is haunted by memories and people who have all grown older. But Newton himself has not grown older, and he cannot die.
The story of Newton is surrounded by 18 songs by David Bowie, and the performance can perhaps be described as a dream play. It is certain that "Lazarus" was Bowie's gift to posterity. Here he collects the threads from his debut around 1970 until his last album Blackstar (2016), which was released just two days before Bowie died. It was also while Bowie was working on Blackstar that he, together with Enda Walsh, wrote "Lazarus". The musical premiered in New York barely two months before David Bowie passed away.
Theater director Stefan Larsson is directing "Lazarus", which since its premiere in 2015 has been performed at a number of theaters in the United States and Europe.
