Every year, the UN and all member states mark the fact that the Charter of the United Nations entered into force on 24 October 1945.
It was at the end of World War II, in February 1945, that British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Soviet leader Josef Stalin, and US President Franklin D. Roosevelt met at the Yalta Conference in Ukraine. There they agreed to establish a new world organization, the United Nations.
The idea was that by cooperating across borders, the atrocities of World War II would be prevented from recurring.
The UN Charter was opened for signature at a meeting in San Francisco on June 26, 1945. It entered into force on October 24 of the same year, after being ratified by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.
By the end of 1945, 51 countries, including Norway, had signed the UN Charter. Today, the UN has 193 member states.
The UN Charter is often called the UN Constitution. It contains rules for what the various UN bodies can do and how they should do it. It also describes what the UN should do and what the various member states are allowed to do.
When a country signs the UN Charter and becomes a member of the UN, they promise to abide by the UN Charter.
UN Day aims to draw attention to the goals and achievements of the UN, and has been celebrated since 1948.
